Denmark pledges 25 million DKK to promote and strengthen human rights in Bangladesh
Denmark has announced a 25 million Danish Krone (DKK) support package for a consortium of Danish organisations — DIGNITY, International Media Support (IMS), and the Danish Institute for Human Rights — to advance human rights, trauma-informed mental health care, and media freedom in Bangladesh.
According to a press release from the Danish Embassy in Dhaka, the three-year initiative will be implemented in collaboration with Bangladeshi partners to strengthen civil society, expand access to rehabilitation for survivors of torture and violence, and promote a free and independent media environment.
Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Christian Brix Møller said there is now a “unique opportunity to strengthen civil society in Bangladesh and tackle key challenges related to human rights violations and impunity.” He added that the new programme aims to “revitalise the pursuit of justice and democratic reform,” drawing on the consortium partners’ extensive expertise in supporting human rights and democracy worldwide.
DIGNITY CEO Rasmus Grue Christensen stressed that “a vibrant civil society is essential for advancing human rights and ensuring accountability and rehabilitation for survivors.” He reaffirmed DIGNITY’s commitment to supporting local partners through capacity building and survivor-centred approaches.
IMS Executive Director Jesper Højberg highlighted the initiative’s focus on strengthening Bangladesh’s media sector through close collaboration with local organisations and authorities. “Our goal is to ensure that every person in Bangladesh can access reliable, independent information,” he said.
Mette Thygesen, International Director of the Danish Institute for Human Rights, noted that the programme will also help reform the National Human Rights Commission and foster stronger connections with civil society and youth to build a more inclusive future.
Officials said the new partnership reflects Denmark’s broader commitment to advancing human rights, democratic reform, and inclusive development across South Asia.
