Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Wednesday said cybersecurity has become more important than protecting a traditional Bengali "Sindhuk" (strongbox), highlighting the growing importance of digital security in the modern era.

"The concept of security has undergone a fundamental transformation. Today, protecting a large business firm's computer systems from hackers is more important than guarding its Sindhuk, and ensuring cybersecurity is more critical than guarding a 1,000-mile frontier," he said.

Swapon made the remarks while inaugurating the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP)'s new media cell, Prantik Konthoshor, at the force's headquarters in the capital's Khilgaon area.

State Minister for Road Transport and Highways Division and the Railways Ministry Habibur Rashid attended the programme as the special guest, while Bangladesh Ansar and VDP Director General Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud presided over the অনুষ্ঠানের held under the theme, "In the Pulse of Time, Fulfilling Aspirations."

Addressing the gathering, the minister said modern warfare extends far beyond conventional weapons, just as communication is no longer limited to the exchange of voices.

"The central bank reserve heist demonstrated how national security can be compromised through digital manipulation," he said, underscoring the need to strengthen cyber resilience.

Swapon praised Bangladesh Ansar and VDP for adopting innovative and forward-looking initiatives to engage its six million members in national development rather than remaining confined to traditional roles.

He said the force's new digital platform, Prantik Konthoshor, would become an important component of the government's broader information management strategy.

Commending the leadership of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, the minister said they had successfully recognised the transition from analogue to digital systems and embraced technological change by taking on a leadership role in digital transformation.

Describing technological advancement as a constantly evolving process, Swapon stressed the need for continuous learning and adaptation.

"In today's technological landscape, there is no room for static knowledge or outdated thinking. We must constantly update ourselves and remain part of the ongoing process of innovation. Otherwise, what is considered modern today may become obsolete tomorrow," he said.

The minister also expressed his hope that Prantik Konthoshor would emerge as a model for other government agencies to follow.

Senior officials of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, among others, were present at the event.
