NICAR approves three new upazilas and one thana
The National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization (NICAR) on Wednesday approved the establishment of three new upazilas and a new police station (thana).
The newly approved upazilas are Fatikchhari North in Chattogram, Bangra in Cumilla, and South Gafargaon in Mymensingh. A new police station, Halda Thana, will also be established in Chattogram.
The decisions were taken at the 121st meeting of NICAR, held at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman presiding, according to the Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.
Shiplu said the committee also approved the inclusion of the portions of the Purbachal New Town Project located in Narayanganj and Gazipur districts, which fall under the jurisdiction of RAJUK, into Dhaka district.
Under the approved plan, Fatikchhari North Upazila will be formed by combining six unions currently under Fatikchhari Upazila in Chattogram. Bangra Upazila will be carved out of Muradnagar Upazila in Cumilla, while South Gafargaon Upazila will comprise eight unions currently under Pagla Police Station in Gafargaon Upazila of Mymensingh.
Halda Thana will be created by dividing the existing Hathazari Police Station in Chattogram.
The meeting was attended by LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher, State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani, Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, and secretaries of the relevant ministries.
