BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the party will form the government alongside those allies with whom it previously carried out simultaneous street movements.

“We have always stood by our commitments. We said we would contest the election with those who joined us in coordinated street movements, and we will form the government with them as well,” he said.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after the election at his residence in Kalibari in the district town this morning.

Referring to the party’s unprecedented electoral victory, Fakhrul said the outcome reaffirms that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) remains the most popular political party in the country.

He noted that since its founding by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the party has maintained its popularity by staying close to the people and practicing people-oriented politics — which he described as its greatest political strength.

Fakhrul emphasized that BNP is not a cadre-based party but a people-based one, adding that it has consistently worked for public welfare both in and out of government. He said the party’s manifesto, vision, reform proposals, and political commitments resonated with voters, leading to what he termed a landslide victory.

Responding to a question about the rise of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, he said it was a consequence of 15 years of what he described as authoritarian rule.

“It is a well-established principle in political science that when democracy is suppressed and dissent is stifled, extremist forces tend to emerge,” he said.

He added that Jamaat’s resurgence was the result of repression by the Awami League, alleging that opposition parties were not allowed to function or contest elections freely.

The BNP Secretary General said the people had already rejected such politics, pointing out that BNP secured a two-thirds majority. “I am confident that the people of Bangladesh will once again resist all negative tendencies through honest and welfare-oriented politics,” he added.

District BNP General Secretary Poygam Ali, leaders at various levels, and journalists from print and electronic media were present at the event.
