In a significant diplomatic engagement, Bangladesh and Pakistan resumed foreign secretary-level talks after a 15-year hiatus, with a meeting held in Dhaka on April 17, 2025. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin and his Pakistani counterpart Amna Baloch led the discussions, which addressed a wide range of bilateral and regional issues. A key focus of the dialogue was Bangladesh's long-standing demands, including a formal public apology from Pakistan for the 1971 atrocities committed by its military and the payment of $4.3 billion as its share of undivided national assets.

Bangladesh also reiterated demands for the repatriation of stranded Pakistanis, the transfer of cyclone relief funds from 1970, and the return of $200 million in foreign donations received before its independence. Jashim Uddin emphasized that this is the right time to resolve these historical issues to pave the way for a more stable and mutually beneficial relationship.

The discussions further included cooperation in defence, trade, SAARC revitalization, agriculture, and education. Bangladesh urged Pakistan to ease trade barriers, remove tariffs, and enhance market access for its goods. Proposals were also made for launching direct flights and deepening ties in agriculture and livestock development. Describing the meeting as “constructive and forward-looking,” Amna Baloch highlighted the importance of unlocking untapped bilateral potential. The talks set the stage for the upcoming visit of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to Dhaka later this month, marking a renewed phase in diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
