Badiul Alam says National Consensus Commission is working to ensure autocracy doesn’t return.

National Consensus Commission (NCC) member Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar said today that the commission is actively working to prevent the resurgence of autocratic rule in the country.

“We have put forward a set of proposals aimed at safeguarding democracy, which we have titled the Draft National Consensus Charter,” he stated.

Dr. Majumdar emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms, saying, “Our charter outlines the essential changes required in the electoral system, constitution, local governance, and overall administrative structure. These reforms reflect the people's will and are intended to ensure that authoritarianism cannot re-establish itself.”

He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a citizen dialogue hosted by SHUJAN (Citizens for Good Governance) at the BRAC Learning Centre in Bashar Hat, Dinajpur.

Responding to questions from journalists following the event, Dr. Majumdar noted that the government has already formed 11 reform committees to address governance issues. “The heads of six of these committees have come together to form the National Consensus Commission, with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus leading the broader reform initiative,” he explained.

“Our focus now is to build broad-based consensus. We’ve already reached agreement on several key reform proposals to avert a return to authoritarian governance, and we’re in the process of holding discussions with political parties,” he added.

The dialogue was chaired by Md. Belal Uddin Shikder Rubel, president of SHUJAN’s Dinajpur District chapter. Leaders and members from the central SHUJAN body, along with representatives from Rangpur Division and the districts of Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, and Panchagarh, also spoke at the event.

More than a hundred participants—including journalists, civil society members, and professionals from various sectors—attended the dialogue.
