Trump announces 30% tariffs on Mexico and EU starting August 1
Trump announces 30% tariffs on Mexico and EU starting August 1.

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that Mexico and the European Union will face new 30% tariffs starting August 1, intensifying pressure on both trading partners amid ongoing trade disputes.
In separate letters posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump cited Mexico’s role in the flow of illicit drugs into the U.S. and the trade imbalance with the EU as justification for the increased duties. The new rate surpasses the 25% tariff earlier imposed on Mexican imports, though goods covered under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) remain exempt.
Canada had already received a similar notice outlining 35% tariffs. For the EU, the 30% levy marks a significant hike from the 20% rate Trump introduced in April, even as talks with Brussels continue.
The EU and several other economies were initially slated to see tariffs rise from a baseline 10% on Wednesday, but Trump postponed the implementation to August 1. Over the past week, the former president has issued updated tariff notices to more than 20 countries.
