Four Bangladeshis died after two boats carrying nearly 100 migrants capsized off the coast of Al-Khums in northwestern Libya, according to the Libyan Red Crescent.

The organisation said it received a report late Thursday about two overturned migrant boats near the Al-Khums shoreline.

The first boat was carrying 26 Bangladeshis, four of whom were found dead.

The second vessel was transporting 69 people—67 Sudanese nationals, including eight children, and two Egyptians—the Red Crescent said.

Emergency and recovery teams were sent to the scene to rescue survivors, recover the bodies, and provide assistance, it added.

Libya remains a key departure point for irregular migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe.

Migration pressures persist, with EU states along the Mediterranean increasingly alarmed by the flow of irregular arrivals.

On Wednesday, the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that deaths on the Central Mediterranean route this year have already exceeded 1,000.
