Yunus urges entrepreneurs to boost exports through increased investment
Yunus highlights the crucial role of export trade in bolstering Bangladesh’s economy.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday called on the country's business community and entrepreneurs to strengthen Bangladesh's export base by increasing investment in the services sector, aiming to enhance overall exports in the competitive global market.
“We must focus on boosting our exports. I urge all businesspeople to invest more in the services sector alongside products to achieve this,” Yunus said during the inauguration of the 29th Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) 2025 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre in Purbachal.
Dr. Yunus underscored the vital role of entrepreneurs, emphasizing that while developing exportable products is crucial, it is even more important to recognize who created those products.
He noted the annual tradition of announcing a "Product of the Year," revealing that furniture has been designated as this year’s highlight. Additionally, Yunus proposed the introduction of an "Entrepreneur of the Year" award to honor the individuals driving innovation and success behind the products.
The Chief Adviser also highlighted government efforts to diversify Bangladesh’s global product presence, noting the remarkable achievements of the readymade garment (RMG) sector, which has secured a leading position in the global apparel market.
Yunus pointed out that export trade significantly contributes to poverty alleviation, job creation, and foreign currency earnings, playing a key role in strengthening Bangladesh’s economy.
He officially inaugurated the month-long fair, which was organized jointly by the Ministry of Commerce and the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
For the first time, stall and pavilion allocations were completed online, and an e-ticketing system was introduced for visitors. Dedicated BRTC bus services and discounted Uber rides have been arranged to facilitate travel to and from the venue.
The fair also features several new initiatives, including a Youth Pavilion to encourage young entrepreneurs in export trade and sector-specific seminars to identify potential growth areas.
Special zones have been designated for electronics, furniture, and foreign participants, while technology corners cater to younger visitors, seating areas accommodate senior citizens, and a children’s park provides entertainment for families.
This is the fourth consecutive year the trade fair is being held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center in Purbachal.
A total of 361 pavilions, stalls, and restaurants have been allocated transparently to local producers, exporters, general businesses, and foreign entities, according to the event’s layout plan.
