Thousands of Hindus took to the streets in Bangladesh, marching against the violence and demanding justice
"On Saturday in Bangladesh, the Hindu community marched in protest against violence directed at Hindus. Thousands of members of the Hindu community took to the streets of Dhaka demanding justice. On Friday, a large number of Bangladeshi Hindus also demonstrated on the streets of Dhaka against the atrocities being committed against their community."
In the neighboring country of Bangladesh, an interim government has been formed, but the situation remains tense. The police are absent from the streets of the capital, Dhaka, and the military has taken full control. The Hindu community in Bangladesh has been continuously protesting against attacks on temples. On Saturday, the Hindu community held marches across the country in opposition to the violence.
Thousands of members of the Hindu community took to the streets of Dhaka demanding justice. On Friday as well, a large number of Bangladeshi Hindus protested against the atrocities being committed against their community. Hundreds of people marched to Shahbagh intersection in the capital, Dhaka, chanting slogans for security, the establishment of law and order, and a secular Bangladesh.
Demand for the reconstruction of temples
Protesters demanded that the government compensate those who have lost their property and rebuild the temples that have been demolished. They stated that they will not leave the country and will remain on the streets to claim their rights. They also thanked those who condemned the attacks against the Jamaat-e-Islami, BNP, and Hindus.
The UN said, "We are against racial violence
Regarding the violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's spokesperson stated that he is against any attacks or violence based on race. The Secretary-General's Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said on Thursday, "We have made it clear that we want to ensure that the violence occurring in Bangladesh in recent weeks is quelled. Certainly, we are against any racially based attacks or incitement to violence on a racial basis."
Several Hindu temples were targeted in the violence
After violence erupted in Bangladesh, several Hindu temples, homes, and businesses were targeted. At least two Hindu leaders affiliated with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party were killed in the violence. The student protests, which began over job quotas, led to the downfall of Sheikh Hasina's government, forcing her to flee the country.
Mohammad Yunus takes charge of the interim government
After Hasina left the country, nationwide violence resulted in at least 232 deaths. Rioters targeted Hindus, their places of worship, and commercial establishments. Several police stations were set on fire, and police officers faced lethal attacks. In response, employees of the Bangladesh police went on an indefinite strike. Now, with the formation of an interim government led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, efforts are also being made to restore normalcy in the country.
