BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo has reiterated his party’s commitment to continuing its movement until democracy is restored through free and fair elections, which he described as the bedrock of a true democratic process.

In an interview with the Daily Sun, Mintoo stated, “Our goal is to restore democracy through impartial elections. Despite enduring years of repression and legal harassment, with approximately 60,000 cases filed against 6-6.5 million BNP members, our movement will persist until a genuinely democratic government is established.”

Reflecting on the BNP’s 17-year struggle for democratic governance, Mintoo criticized the last four elections as manipulated attempts to maintain Awami League’s grip on power. He underscored the BNP’s mission to establish a government accountable to the people.

“Our objective is to end authoritarian practices and ensure fair elections. While we do not oppose an interim government, we expect it to facilitate a free and fair election through necessary reforms,” he said.

Mintoo emphasized the importance of reforms to achieve political stability and social harmony. “Elections are essential for legitimacy. People’s power forms the foundation of all reforms,” he added.

The BNP has outlined a 31-point state reform agenda that includes constitutional, institutional, social, and economic changes. “Reforms must have a public mandate, as the constitution is a social contract. Any reform lacking public approval will be unsustainable,” he said. Mintoo urged the interim government to engage political parties to build consensus on the reforms needed for fair elections.

He also highlighted the BNP’s vision for a new political approach, focusing on unity among political parties to address national challenges. “Our acting chairman envisions a strong economy and a better quality of life for all. Achieving this requires national consensus beyond political rivalry,” he said.

Mintoo stressed the importance of cooperation between electoral winners and losers, warning that disunity on fundamental national issues would harm the country. He also advocated justice for crimes committed by Awami League leaders, stating, “Wrongdoers, whether politicians or businessmen, must be held accountable. However, banning political parties or excluding them from elections risks future chaos.”

Addressing allegations of extortion within the BNP, Mintoo revealed that the party had expelled about 1,100 members and was investigating 1,200 more. “Our leadership is clear: no one is above the law or can misuse power,” he said.

Mintoo dismissed speculation about a “minus two” formula targeting the Zia family, asserting their pivotal role in BNP politics. “Khaleda Zia may be aging, but Tarique Rahman will soon take the lead. Excluding the Zia family from politics is a daydream,” he said.

On foreign relations, Mintoo stressed the importance of maintaining equitable and respectful ties with neighbors, including India. “Good relations are essential for political and economic progress but must be based on mutual respect,” he noted.

Looking forward, Mintoo expressed hope for elections in 2025, a reduction in inequality, and the restoration of people’s power. “We aim to build a nation where democratic values flourish, and citizens reclaim their rightful power through free elections,” he concluded.
