2026 JS polls: Jamaat fields 33 candidates in Rangpur division
Jamaat Ameer calls on the Chief Adviser to delay the national election until those responsible for the July-August killings are brought to justice.

As part of its early preparations for the 13th parliamentary election, likely to be held a week before Ramadan in February next year, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has unveiled the names of 33 prospective candidates from the Rangpur division.
Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman made the announcement during a public rally at Rangpur Zilla School ground on Friday afternoon.
Following the announcement, Shafiqur urged the Chief Adviser of the interim government to defer the national election until the perpetrators of the July-August killing spree are brought to justice. He further called for the polls to be held only after the successful implementation of reform measures aimed at preventing the return of fascism in the country.
Earlier, on 13 June, Chief Adviser Professor Mohammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman held a high-level meeting in London. In a joint statement issued afterward, both sides confirmed that the next general election would take place a week before Ramadan in February 2026.
Although the official election schedule is yet to be announced, Jamaat has begun introducing its prospective candidates for all 300 constituencies through public events. The party's Ameer is actively touring the country to rally public support for Jamaat-backed candidates.
This proactive campaign is seen as part of Jamaat’s broader strategy to boost the visibility of its nominees and increase pressure on the government to hold timely elections.
