President Donald Trump said he intends to begin notifying U.S. trading partners of their tariff rates as early as today, as last-minute negotiations to avoid increased levies reach their final phase.

“My inclination is to send a letter and say what tariff they’ll be paying,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday. “It’s just much easier.” He added, “We’ll probably start sending some letters tomorrow.”

Trump noted that the new tariffs will take effect from August 1, with rates varying between 10% and as high as 60% or 70%, depending on the country. His remarks come just days before a wave of steep, country-specific duties is scheduled to be imposed—targeting a wide range of economies from Taiwan to the European Union.

The upcoming tariffs follow an April announcement in which Trump levied a blanket 10% duty on imports from nearly all trading partners, with plans to increase rates further for select nations. However, those hikes were postponed until July 9 to allow time for negotiations.

In the meantime, several countries have been scrambling to secure trade deals that would shield them from the looming tariff surge. U.S. officials have indicated that multiple agreements could be unveiled in the coming days.

So far, Washington has finalized pacts with the United Kingdom and Vietnam, while the U.S. and China have agreed to temporarily reduce their exceptionally high tariffs on each other’s goods.

As the July deadline nears, Trump has reiterated his plan to notify individual countries of their tariff rates through formal letters.
