Trump threatens 100% tariffs on EU nations over digital services tax
US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose a 100% tariff on goods from countries that enforce a digital services tax, warning that such measures would override any existing trade agreements with the United States.
"Any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He added that the tariff would "supersede Trade Deals made with the Country, whether implemented, signed, or not."
The warning came just a day after European Union member states approved a trade agreement negotiated last year with Washington, which limits tariffs on European imports to 15%.
Trump has consistently argued that non-tariff barriers, including Europe's digital and environmental regulations, unfairly restrict US exports. His administration has repeatedly targeted such policies as part of its broader trade agenda.
Earlier this month, Trump specifically warned France that it could face a 100% tariff on its wine and champagne exports unless Paris scrapped its digital services tax on major technology companies.
France introduced the levy in 2019, imposing a 3% tax on revenues generated within the country by large technology firms, including US-based companies such as Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google's parent company, Alphabet.
