The UN General Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
The UN General Assembly’s Third Committee has unanimously approved a resolution on Rohingya Muslims, calling for renewed global commitment to a lasting solution and the safe, voluntary return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
The resolution, jointly proposed by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the European Union (EU), was cosponsored by 105 countries, according to a message from Bangladesh’s mission to the UN in New York.
Adopted every year since 2017, the resolution voices serious concern over ongoing human rights abuses in Rakhine State, including the targeted persecution of Rohingya Muslims, limits on humanitarian access, and the continued flow of refugees into Bangladesh and neighbouring countries.
It urges sustained international engagement to ensure the Rohingyas’ safe, dignified and sustainable return to their homeland.
After the adoption, Bangladesh’s delegation thanked member states for their consistent support but expressed frustration that no significant progress has been made in eight years toward enabling repatriation.
The delegation emphasised that Bangladesh can no longer shoulder the responsibility of hosting 1.3 million Rohingyas and called for urgent global action to facilitate their return to Myanmar.
