Tarique suspects a conspiracy behind the proposal for proportional representation in Bangladesh
He claims that some political parties have already demanded the introduction of a proportional representation system in Bangladesh, which he views as part of a conspiracy.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has urged the country's political leadership to examine whether there is a hidden agenda behind the proposal to introduce a proportional representation system in Bangladesh.
“Some political parties have already demanded the adoption of proportional representation. But I urge everyone to critically assess whether this system aligns with Bangladesh’s present reality and geographical context,” he said in a virtual address from London on Tuesday.
The remarks came during a programme titled ‘Mass Uprising 2024: National Unity and Democratic Journey’, held at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre. The event marked the beginning of BNP’s 36-day nationwide campaign commemorating the first anniversary of the July–August mass uprising.
Tarique also stressed the need to preserve anti-fascist unity, warning against any attempt by hegemonic forces to reduce Bangladesh to a subservient state.
“We must stand firm in our national unity against fascism so that no force can dominate our country or allow authoritarianism to rise again,” he stated.
He vowed to honour the sacrifice of those killed during the mass uprising by rebuilding a democratic Bangladesh rooted in equity and justice.
Describing the July–August movement as a turning point, Tarique said it has opened up an opportunity to reshape the nation, and emphasized that there is no room for error in achieving that goal.
He called on all political parties to work together in realizing the aspirations of the people who laid down their lives during the uprising.
Earlier, during a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami proposed the introduction of proportional representation ahead of the next general election.
