Students from seven colleges announce fresh blockade today amid holdup in university ordinance
A large number of students continued demonstrating late into the night with a sit-in in front of the Education Ministry.
Students from the seven government colleges in Dhaka have announced a fresh blockade for Monday as part of their intensified campaign demanding the immediate issuance of the final ordinance for the proposed Dhaka Central University.
On Sunday, they blocked several major roads in the capital from the morning before lifting the barricades later to ease public hardship. The students said their movement would continue until the ordinance is officially issued.
Many continued their demonstrations into the night, staging a sit-in outside the Education Ministry.
The protesters allege that despite repeatedly raising their demands, the ministry has shown no tangible progress, leaving over 150,000 students facing an identity crisis and academic uncertainty. They vowed to carry on with blockades, sit-ins and siege programmes in the coming days.
Although the Education Ministry has released the draft law for the proposed university, the final ordinance has remained stalled for months.
Students say the delay is causing confusion over institutional identity, disrupting academic activities and undermining future career prospects. To minimise public inconvenience, they have been holding their demonstrations near the Education Building.
On 12 November, the ministry announced a policy decision to merge the seven colleges to form a new public university named Dhaka Central University, formally ending their long-standing affiliation with the University of Dhaka.
