Steps undertaken to designate Sandwip as a seaport: CA

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus announced today that steps have been taken to designate Sandwip as a seaport and reopen the Kumira-Guptachara ghat.
“Initiatives are underway to declare Sandwip a seaport, reopen Kumira-Guptachara ghat, introduce a Dhaka-Kumira bus service, develop roads in the ferry ghat area, and ensure regular dredging of the waterway,” he stated at a public gathering marking the launch of the Chattogram-Sandwip ferry service.
Addressing the event virtually from the State Guest House Jamuna, the Chief Adviser expressed confidence that these measures would alleviate the long-standing hardships faced by Sandwip residents.
He emphasized that with the introduction of the ferry service, people of all ages—including children, the sick, and the elderly—can now cross the sea safely and comfortably.
Encouraging Sandwip residents to contribute to the development of their region, Prof. Yunus also acknowledged their vital role in strengthening the national economy through remittances sent from abroad.
The much-anticipated ferry service on the Chattogram-Sandwip route was officially launched today, marking a significant milestone for the island’s 400,000 residents.
Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd.) M Shakhawat Hossain inaugurated the newly built ferry terminal and the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) bus station at Banshbaria in Sitakunda at 8:30 am.
Following the inauguration, a public gathering was held at Sandwip Upazila premises, where Chief Adviser Prof. Yunus addressed the audience virtually as the chief guest.
The launch of this ferry service fulfills a long-cherished dream of Sandwip residents. The ferry will operate between Banshbaria in Sitakunda, Chattogram, and Guptachara in Sandwip.
