No need for disappointment regarding the country's economic situation: Dr. Salehuddin

Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed on Tuesday stated that there is no reason for disappointment regarding various aspects of the country’s economy.

"I am well aware of the economic situation, and there is nothing to be disappointed about," he remarked.

Dr. Salehuddin made these comments while briefing reporters after presiding over two separate meetings of the Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs and Government Purchase, held at the Cabinet Division Conference Room at Bangladesh Secretariat.

When asked about Bangladesh’s preparations for its LDC graduation in 2026, he mentioned that the government is implementing a Smooth Transition Strategy (STS). “Smooth does not mean a sudden fall, but rather a gradual transition, similar to an airplane’s descent, and we are approaching it accordingly,” he explained.

He highlighted that many countries are closely observing Bangladesh due to its overall satisfactory economic performance despite certain challenges. “Some nations believe that if we successfully navigate this transition, it will encourage them as well. Our national pride will also be enhanced. While some preparations may still be required, we are taking the necessary steps,” he added.

Addressing concerns about congestion in unloading goods at Chattogram Port, he assured that the issue has been resolved.

Regarding the availability of edible and soybean oil in the market, he said the government is closely monitoring the situation. "Businessmen often find ways to maneuver, but we are making every effort to manage the situation. No matter how strategic they become, we must be more intelligent in handling these challenges," he stated.

He further mentioned that the Ministry of Commerce has been advised to look into the matter, and both the ministry and the commerce adviser are managing it effectively.

When questioned about the potential impact of a statement made by U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Bangladesh’s bilateral relations, Dr. Salehuddin asserted that it would not affect the country’s economy in terms of multilateral or bilateral ties.

Referring to a recent article on Bangladesh published by a journalist from The Guardian, he said, “Previously, we were on the verge of a downturn, but now we have turned things around and are progressing.”

He further commented, “Many things are written from different perspectives. Does everyone from outside fully understand the situation? These articles often reflect personal viewpoints and opinions.”
