Islamabad’s Quiet Welcome as Cricket Fever Takes Over

Islamabad International Airport leaves a lasting impression with its immaculate cleanliness, warm hospitality, and an unusual sense of tranquility—something rarely found in international airports. Unlike the bustling hubs of major global cities, Islamabad’s airport offers a calm, almost small-town gateway experience, making arrivals notably unhurried.

As the capital of Pakistan, one might expect its airport to be a grand and busy transit point, filled with travelers and aircraft. However, the reality is quite the opposite. The relatively low number of passengers adds to its serene atmosphere, a reflection of Pakistan’s still-developing status as a global tourist destination. Upon landing from Dubai in the afternoon, the vast, empty expanse of the airport was immediately striking—our aircraft was the only one in sight. There was no frantic rush, no hurried footsteps echoing through the terminal; instead, everything moved at an easy, unpressured pace.

This lack of chaos extended to the immigration process, where officials handled their duties with remarkable ease. With no long queues to manage, they welcomed passengers with warm smiles. One officer, noticing a Bangladeshi passport, made an educated guess about the purpose of our visit.

"The ICC Champions Trophy, right?" he asked, his eyes lighting up with excitement.

Even the army personnel stationed at the airport shared a similar enthusiasm. After nearly three decades, Pakistan was once again hosting a major ICC event—the last being the 1996 World Cup. The excitement was evident as an officer greeted Bangladeshi sports reporters with a friendly remark.

"Good to see Bangladeshis coming over here," he said warmly. "Good luck to your team."

A Bangladeshi journalist, quick to respond, smiled and replied, "You too!"—a playful nod to Pakistan’s tough start in the tournament after a heavy loss to New Zealand. The exchange sparked laughter, a shared moment of camaraderie over a mutual love for cricket.

Outside the airport, Islamabad’s streets mirrored the nation's cricket fever. Billboards and posters featured the country's cricketing legends—from the iconic Imran Khan and charismatic Wasim Akram to the young pace sensation, Naseem Shah. Messages celebrating the Champions Trophy adorned city walls, reflecting Pakistan’s pride in hosting the prestigious event once again.

Cricket fever had taken over Islamabad, and for the coming weeks, it would dominate conversations, headlines, and the city's very heartbeat.
