Government suspends 18 police officers, including former DB chief Harun
The suspension order also covers three deputy inspector generals (DIGs), six additional deputy inspector generals (Addl DIGs), and four superintendents.

On Monday, the government suspended 18 police officers — including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) chief Harun-or-Rashid — for being absent from duty without authorisation in the wake of the July uprising.
According to a Home Ministry Public Security Division notification, the officers will continue to receive subsistence allowance during their suspension. The order, signed by Senior Secretary Nasimul Gani with presidential approval, was issued under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018.
The list of suspended officers includes three deputy inspector generals (DIGs), six additional DIGs, four superintendents of police (SPs), one assistant superintendent (ASP), and several other senior officials.
Many of those penalised were known to have wielded significant influence under the former Awami League government. Harun-or-Rashid, in particular, was often criticised for allegedly using the DB to crack down on political opponents and journalists.
The decision is part of the interim government’s ongoing purge of senior police officials accused of human rights violations, political bias, and desertion of duty after Sheikh Hasina’s government was ousted on 5 August 2024.
