Foundation for Enduring Dhaka-Beijing Relations: What Should It Be?
Experts Urge Mutual Respect for People's Aspirations in Dhaka-Beijing Relations

Experts believe that sustainable Dhaka-Beijing relations must be rooted in a people-centric approach, especially in the context of a perceived tilt toward China following Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s recent “historic” visit to Beijing. They argue that public aspirations and welfare must take precedence in bilateral cooperation, emphasizing that direct engagement in sectors such as agriculture, water management, vocational education, and technology transfer can generate employment, increase productivity, and foster long-term development. While large infrastructure projects are significant, experts underscore the importance of initiatives that directly benefit citizens to build lasting goodwill. Former ambassador Md Sufiur Rahman noted that China traditionally maintains ties at the governmental level, often overlooking public concerns, which can lead to misperceptions. He highlighted that Chinese responses to Bangladesh’s recent electoral processes—widely criticized for irregularities—have been mechanical, failing to acknowledge the will of the people. Although the Chief Adviser’s visit marks a political milestone, it is seen as less substantial in scope compared to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s 2016 visit. Nevertheless, the visit is considered pivotal in redefining the trajectory of bilateral relations, particularly with progress in previously stalled cooperation areas like the Teesta River project, which faced resistance due to regional sensitivities. Enhanced engagement in flood forecasting, river dredging, and drought prevention has now begun, reflecting a shift toward broader cooperation. Furthermore, China’s involvement in modernizing the Mongla port is viewed as a strategically significant step that may influence regional connectivity and align with broader geopolitical dynamics. Experts assert that such collaborations, focused on tangible public benefits, are essential for a resilient and mutually beneficial partnership between Bangladesh and China.
