Smart Cards to Replace Fake TCB Cards for Farmers: Food Adviser
Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder announced today that farmers will be issued smart cards following the cancellation of counterfeit Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) cards.
“Farmers will be more motivated if they receive fair prices for their produce,” he said while inspecting the progress of a silo and food storage facility under construction in Bandar upazila of Narayanganj district.
Majumder noted that while rice prices in the country are gradually stabilizing, they should not fall too sharply. “We must ensure farmers are paid fairly for their rice,” he emphasized.
He acknowledged the widespread presence of fake TCB cards and reiterated that these would be invalidated and replaced with smart cards to ensure transparency and accountability.
Regarding wheat demand, the adviser stated that the country requires approximately 7 million metric tons annually but produces only about 1 million metric tons domestically. “This shortfall of nearly 6 million metric tons is met largely through private sector imports,” he added.
Majumder expressed optimism about this year’s Boro paddy harvest, saying it would contribute to a more sustainable national food reserve. If the production of Boro and other crops remains strong, the government may consider expanding the number of beneficiaries under food-related programs.
He was accompanied during the visit by Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Md Zahidul Islam and Superintendent of Police Prottus Kumar Majumder.
