Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser (CA), Shafiqul Alam, today reaffirmed that the national election will be held within the timeframe announced by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, with no possibility of delay.

“The election will not be postponed by even a single day,” he said while speaking to reporters after attending the ‘TEDx Comilla University’ event at the Mainamoti Auditorium of the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) in Kotbari, Cumilla.

Shafiqul Alam emphasized that there is no uncertainty surrounding the election. “The election will be conducted as scheduled, in a peaceful and orderly environment. This government is committed to delivering the most transparent and credible election in the country’s history,” he stated.

He noted that Professor Yunus has consistently assured the public about the election’s certainty and fairness. “A level playing field will be ensured, and all candidates will have equal opportunities. No one will be able to claim they were treated unjustly,” he added.

Addressing the ongoing discussions on introducing a Proportional Representation (PR) system, Shafiqul said dialogue is underway between the National Consensus Commission and political parties. “While it takes years in other countries to reach decisions on such matters, our political parties have already reached consensus on eight issues. Talks are progressing on seven more, and discussions on the remaining three are expected soon,” he explained, expressing hope for positive outcomes on all fronts.

On the law and order situation, Shafiqul stated that the government is actively maintaining stability. “In every significant incident, perpetrators are being apprehended swiftly and brought to justice. Especially in sensitive cases like rape, expedited trials are being ensured,” he said.

When asked about any government decision to separate Gopalganj, he dismissed such speculation. “The people of Gopalganj are equal citizens of Bangladesh. This government does not discriminate based on region, and no such separation is under consideration,” he clarified. Responding to concerns about alleged human rights violations in the area, he invited journalists to visit Gopalganj and see the reality for themselves.

Regarding the anticipated announcement of the July Charter on August 5, Shafiqul said that while a decision has not yet been finalized, discussions are ongoing. “Political settlements on such major issues often take years elsewhere, but here, parties are meeting daily to resolve outstanding matters. We hope the Charter will be announced based on broad political consensus,” he said.

Highlighting the youth’s role in the July Revolution, he praised their peaceful and impactful activism. “They protested without aggression, using phrases like ‘Natok Kom Koro PO’ to demand reforms—and they’ve shown how to achieve them,” he remarked.

He noted that young people, who were long deprived of their voting rights, are now eager and enthusiastic about participating in the upcoming election.

Comilla University Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Haider Ali, news presenter Farabi Hafiz, and astrophotographer Zubayer Kawlin were also among the speakers at the event.
