BB to roll out Tk25cr special fund for victims of July Uprising

Bangladesh Bank (BB) has announced the creation of a Tk25 crore special fund to support the families of those killed and provide medical treatment for those injured during the July 2024 mass uprising.

The decision was made during a meeting at the central bank on Monday, according to officials familiar with the development. BB will contribute Tk14 crore from its own resources, while 11 selected banks have agreed to pitch in Tk1 crore each, bringing the total to Tk25 crore.

Sources said the initiative follows a meeting between BB Governor Ahsan H Mansur and the managing directors of all commercial banks. Prior to the main session, the governor held separate talks with the heads of 11 banks that have shown strong performance on key indicators, seeking their support for the fund. The banks agreed in principle to contribute.

Each participating bank will now seek approval from its board before transferring the pledged amount to the central bank. The fund aims to provide immediate relief to affected families and cover medical expenses for the injured.
