A major controversy has erupted in Bangladesh cricket amid allegations that the country’s withdrawal from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was influenced by a hardline stance from interim government adviser Asif Nazrul.

Questions have surfaced over why Bangladesh did not take part in the tournament and whether external or internal factors played a role behind the scenes.

According to sources within cricket administration, tensions escalated on 3 January after Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directors held an online meeting following Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from the IPL. They reportedly agreed to seek clarification from the International Cricket Council (ICC) the next day.

However, the situation shifted dramatically that same night when Nazrul stated on social media that Bangladesh should avoid travelling to India for the T20 World Cup due to security concerns—effectively, it is alleged, closing the door on further negotiations.

He later reiterated this stance in meetings, maintaining that Bangladesh should not participate in the India-hosted event and proposing alternatives such as relocating matches to Sri Lanka.

On 13 January, the Ministry of Youth and Sports issued a letter, signed by then secretary Mahbub-Ul Alam, formally advising the BCB against travelling to India. The letter also assured government support if matches were held outside India.

Following this directive, the BCB explored alternative arrangements, including shifting the venue to Sri Lanka, but failed to gain backing from other ICC member boards.

As a result, Bangladesh was ultimately left out of the World Cup after losing a vote at the ICC level.

Several former officials and stakeholders have since criticised the decision-making process, arguing that Bangladesh’s diplomatic approach faltered and that the withdrawal caused reputational harm to the country’s cricket.

Some former directors claim the decision was driven more by personal judgement than institutional consensus, while others say cricket administrators must also share responsibility for failing to secure participation or viable alternatives.

Observers note that Bangladesh’s absence from a major global tournament has raised broader concerns about governance, coordination between ministries and the cricket board, and the country’s international sporting diplomacy.

The issue is now expected to undergo an official review, with the Ministry of Youth and Sports announcing an investigation, though a committee has yet to be formed.
