AI-powered auto-fine system to be rolled out across all highways: Salahuddin.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Tuesday announced that the government will gradually roll out an AI-powered automated fine system on highways nationwide after assessing the performance of the system launched on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.
Speaking at the inauguration of the AI-powered Auto Fine System at the Highway Police’s Command, Control and Monitoring Centre in Meghnaghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj, he said the initiative would improve road safety, traffic discipline and enforcement transparency while helping reduce accidents.
Under the pilot project, AI cameras have been installed on 490 pillars along the Dhaka-Chattogram highway to automatically detect violations such as speeding, dangerous overtaking, ignoring traffic signals, driving on the wrong side and illegal parking.
Once a violation is detected, the vehicle’s details will be matched with the BRTA database. The registered owner will receive an SMS containing details of the offence and fine, which can be paid remotely through mobile financial services.
Salahuddin said repeated violations could result in tougher legal and administrative action, including vehicle registration cancellation in line with BRTA regulations.
He also warned of strict action against illegal toll collection, saying CCTV and AI cameras would help detect such activities. Unauthorised three-wheelers and non-motorised vehicles will also be barred from highways.
The minister urged highway police, transport owners and workers, and the public to cooperate with the technology-driven initiative and called for wider awareness campaigns through traditional and social media.
