Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus emphasized the critical need for immediate and unified action to address the climate crisis, particularly in the Bay of Bengal region, which faces rising sea levels and erratic weather patterns affecting coastal communities. Speaking at the inauguration of the Bay of Bengal Conversation, organized by the Centre for Governance Studies in Dhaka, Yunus underscored Bangladesh's immense potential for fostering green growth and sustainable development, driven by its vibrant youth population.

"Bangladesh is a nation of youth, with half of its 171 million people under the age of 27," Yunus stated. "This makes the country a powerhouse of creativity, capable of leading global efforts in sustainability by designing innovative models of green growth that protect and enhance the environment. But achieving this requires courage, collaboration, and a shared vision for the future."

Yunus urged the creation of a transformative "new civilization," criticizing the current one for being environmentally destructive and economically unequal. "We need a world of three zeros: zero net carbon emissions, zero wealth concentration—achieved by embracing social business to solve problems instead of maximizing profit—and zero unemployment, by empowering youth to become entrepreneurs rather than job-seekers."

He also expressed pride in Bangladesh's history of youth-led initiatives, pointing to the recent revolution that ended a 16-year authoritarian regime. Yunus encouraged international delegates to explore Dhaka's streets and witness the inspiring artwork created by young people, which he described as a spontaneous and powerful expression of hope amid adversity.

Former Bolivian President Jorge Fernando Quiroga Ramirez and former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad joined the event virtually, offering their insights during the opening ceremony. The three-day conference, held at a Dhaka hotel, brings together national and international delegates to discuss pressing regional and global issues.
