The recent arrests involved AL activists and are unrelated to Trump, according to the CA Press Wing
Several Indian newspapers have been "actively spreading misinformation" about the student-led mass uprising that followed the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a popular revolution last August.
The Chief Adviser's press wing stated on Sunday night that there have been no arrests or crackdowns on supporters of US President-elect Donald Trump in Bangladesh.
The press wing also addressed the misinformation being "aggressively spread" by some Indian newspapers regarding the student-led mass uprising following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a popular revolution in August. The wing criticized these outlets for exaggerating violence against minorities in the aftermath of the revolution and falsely linking recent arrests of Awami League (AL) supporters to Trump.
According to the press wing, dozens of AL activists were arrested on Sunday in Dhaka for allegedly planning subversive activities. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police issued a statement confirming these arrests.
Some of the arrested individuals were reportedly carrying photos of Donald Trump, which they claimed they were ordered to do by Sheikh Hasina's supporters. These individuals told police that they did not follow US politics and had carried Trump posters solely at Hasina's instruction, using them as shields against arrest.
The press wing further pointed out that certain Indian media outlets, such as India Today, had misreported recent events in Bangladesh. They incorrectly portrayed a rally organized by the Awami League on Noor Hossain Day (November 10) as a celebration of Trump’s victory in the US presidential election. There is no record of any "Trump supporters" rallying in Bangladesh, nor was Trump mentioned in any Awami League materials for Noor Hossain Day.
The press wing also clarified that Sheikh Hasina had instructed AL activists to carry Trump posters along with those of herself and Bangabandhu, specifically to use the Trump posters as a shield against police action. This instruction was reportedly contained in a leaked phone conversation between Hasina and a party worker.
The interim government had already made it clear on Saturday that no AL rallies would be allowed on Sunday. The subsequent raids and arrests were in response to these directives and must be understood in that context.
