Bangladeshi Coach Mentors Australia's Young Opener Konstas
The fourth Test between Australia and India is underway in Melbourne, with 19-year-old Australian opener Sam Konstas making his debut on Thursday.
The young cricketer showcased his talent with some stunning shots and scored a half-century in his first match. However, he was eventually dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja, having made 62 runs.
What makes Konstas' debut even more intriguing is its connection to Bangladesh.
During the match commentary, Isa Guha revealed that Konstas' batting coach is a Bangladeshi—Tahmid Islam, a former first-class cricketer from Bangladesh.
According to The Age, both Tahmid and Konstas live in Sydney, where Tahmid began coaching the young opener at Cranbrook School. Additionally, former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has also played a key role in mentoring Konstas.
Tahmid's cricketing background is also noteworthy. He was part of the Prime Bank Cricket Club during the 2017 Bangladesh Premier Division Cricket League, though he didn’t play in any matches that season. The club introduced him as an Australian-born Bangladeshi in one of their promotional videos.
Sam Konstas made history with his debut. At just 19 years and 85 days old, he became the youngest opener in Australia’s Test cricket history, breaking Archie Jackson's 1929 record.
The partnership between a Bangladeshi coach and an Australian prodigy adds an intriguing dimension to this historic debut, highlighting how talent and mentorship can transcend borders.
