Folarin Balogun scored before being sent off as the United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 on Wednesday to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup last 16.

The victory marked the co-hosts' first World Cup knockout-stage win in nearly 25 years and only the second in the nation's history, setting up a round-of-16 showdown with Belgium in Seattle on Monday.

Balogun sent the home crowd into celebration by opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time, with an estimated 30 million viewers across the United States tuning in to the highly anticipated match.

However, the striker's evening took a dramatic turn in the second half when a VAR review resulted in a straight red card following a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic. Reduced to 10 men, the Americans still sealed the victory when Malik Tillman curled home a superb free-kick late in the game.

The atmosphere was electric before kick-off as US fans packed the stadium in California's Bay Area, buoyed by optimism and the traditional pre-match fighter jet flyover.

Bosnia signalled their intentions immediately with a direct long ball from kick-off, while the United States pushed their defensive line high up the pitch.

The visitors created the better early opportunities. Veteran captain Edin Dzeko controlled a long pass before setting up Ermedin Demirovic, whose effort was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Matt Freese. Freese was called into action again moments later, preventing Kerim Alajbegovic's dangerous corner from curling directly into the net.

The Americans gradually gained control. Balogun appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty after a challenge from Amar Dedic before having a goal ruled out for offside after latching onto Weston McKennie's pass.

The breakthrough finally came in first-half stoppage time. US captain Tim Ream intercepted a Bosnian goal kick and quickly found Tillman, whose pass deflected into Balogun's path. The striker kept his composure to slot the ball beneath goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.

The United States nearly doubled their lead before the interval when Tyler Adams created another opening. Sergino Dest headed the ball back to Balogun, whose close-range effort clipped the crossbar.

Bosnia suffered another setback early in the second half as Dzeko was forced off injured, prompting coach Sergej Barbarez to introduce three substitutes. The changes added pace to the attack, with Wisconsin-born Esmir Bajraktarevic helping the visitors press more aggressively.

The match swung dramatically in the 64th minute when Balogun was shown a straight red card after VAR deemed he had stamped on Muharemovic's foot.

Sensing an opportunity, Bosnia pushed forward, but Demirovic squandered a promising chance by shooting straight at Freese.

During a hydration break, US coach Mauricio Pochettino gathered his players into a tight on-field huddle, urging his side to remain disciplined as they prepared to defend with 10 men.

Christian Pulisic briefly thought he had extended the lead, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.

The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute after Dest won a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. Tillman curled a superb effort over the wall and beyond Vasilj despite the goalkeeper getting fingertips to the ball.

Bosnia pressed relentlessly during 10 minutes of stoppage time, but substitute Ermin Mahmic dragged a late effort narrowly wide of the far post.

The Americans held firm to preserve the clean sheet and complete a memorable victory, extending their World Cup campaign on home soil as chants of "USA" and renditions of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" echoed around the stadium.
