US head coach Mauricio Pochettino credited a strong collective effort rather than individual brilliance for his side's emphatic 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match of the World Cup.

The win marked the first time the United States had scored four goals in a World Cup match. Forward Folarin Balogun netted twice, becoming the first American player since the 1930 World Cup to score a brace in a tournament game.

Despite standout displays from Balogun, Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, Pochettino chose to highlight the contributions of the entire squad and coaching staff.

“It was the collective approach,” he said, while also praising the fans for creating an electric atmosphere.

“They were amazing. We can achieve great things when the supporters are behind us like this.”

Although the convincing victory underlined the Americans' attacking strength, there was some concern over Pulisic's condition after the captain was substituted at halftime with a calf injury.

Pochettino stressed that while the team was pleased with the result, it remained only the first step in a long tournament.

He added that the extended preparation period before the World Cup had been invaluable, allowing the coaching staff to work closely with players on tactics and development rather than simply assembling a squad, as is often the case ahead of international fixtures.

The United States will continue its Group D campaign against Turkey and Australia.
