Gabriela Ramos Patina, Mexico’s nominee for the post of UNESCO Director-General for the 2025–2029 term, paid a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at the state guest house Jamuna in Dhaka on Sunday.

During their meeting, Patina praised Bangladesh’s achievements in education, culture, and inclusive development. “Bangladesh has shown how resilience, policy focus, and equity can deliver real change,” she said, adding that UNESCO views the country not just as a member, but as a promising partner.

She also lauded Prof Yunus’ leadership during a pivotal period, remarking, “Your appointment brings hope—not only for Bangladesh but for all who champion transparent and principled governance.”

Prof Yunus welcomed Patina’s visit and candidacy, stating, “We are undergoing a difficult yet vital transformation. The stakes are high, but we are determined to rebuild public trust and institutions that truly serve the people.”

He highlighted the recent BIDA Investment Summit as a turning point in investor sentiment, calling it “a signal that Bangladesh is open, reform-minded, and committed to responsible growth.”

Reflecting on 50 years of diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and Mexico, both sides emphasized the potential for deeper cooperation in education, cultural heritage, and climate resilience.

The meeting was also attended by Senior Secretary of SDG Affairs Lamiya Morshed and Mexican Non-resident Ambassador to Bangladesh Federico Salas, among others.
