Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has expressed confidence that the Nationalist Citizen Party (NCP) will not hinder the country’s ongoing democratic transition, despite its persistent demand for the ‘Water Lily’ (Shapla) election symbol.

Speaking to reporters after a closed-door meeting at the Circuit House in Chattogram on Sunday, the CEC clarified that the Election Commission (EC) must adhere to its established regulations regarding symbol allocation.

“When a political party registers, it must select from the approved list of symbols. Since ‘Shapla’ is not included in that list, the EC cannot assign it. No exception has ever been made in this regard,” Nasir Uddin explained. He added that he remained optimistic about the NCP leadership—many of whom played key roles in the 2024 movement—acting responsibly. “I believe they will not act against the democratic process,” he said.

Addressing major electoral challenges, the CEC highlighted the need to maintain law and order before, during, and after the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.

To ensure a peaceful and credible vote, he said the EC had instructed law enforcement agencies to take firm measures, including recovering illegal firearms.

“We are determined to hold a clean and transparent election. There will be no hidden votes and no ballots cast in the dark of night,” Nasir Uddin affirmed.

He also urged the media to report responsibly during the election period, particularly on social media platforms.

“Media outlets must verify information before publishing or broadcasting election-related content. Misinformation can cause confusion and unrest,” he cautioned.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioners from across the Chattogram division, senior officials from the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and the army, along with representatives from various election-related departments.
