Bangladesh Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has requested the support of Qatar Charity to introduce technology education for hundreds of thousands of madrasa students in Bangladesh. The appeal was made during a meeting with Qatar Charity’s acting chief, Nawaf Abdullah Al Hammadi, held on the sidelines of the Earthna Summit in Doha.

Prof Yunus lauded Qatar Charity’s humanitarian initiatives in Bangladesh, particularly orphan sponsorship programmes and LPG distribution for Rohingya refugees. He stressed the enthusiasm of madrasa students to acquire knowledge in emerging fields such as computer programming and artificial intelligence. “We will most welcome any support for the madrasa students,” he stated.

He suggested that Qatar Charity could directly engage with madrasas in Bangladesh to help integrate technology into their academic programmes. Emphasising the students’ learning potential, he remarked, “Madrasa students are very quick learners. They will grasp these skills rapidly.”

In response, Mr. Al Hammadi acknowledged Qatar Charity’s ongoing support to several madrasas through life-skills and livelihood initiatives, and assured that the proposal would be seriously considered.

The discussion also included continued humanitarian efforts for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar. Professor Yunus urged for sustained LPG distribution and further assistance in education and healthcare.

Highlighting the significance of female education, the Chief Adviser called for focused support towards girl students, particularly those enrolled in madrasas. Additionally, the two leaders reviewed Bangladesh’s microfinance landscape and its success in poverty alleviation. Prof Yunus encouraged Qatar Charity to consider collaborations with private microfinance institutions to expand their reach and impact.
