Bangladesh Ranks 106th On Global Innovation Index

Bangladesh remains among the least innovative countries globally, placed in the lower tier of a newly released international ranking.
In the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025, published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Bangladesh ranked 106th out of 139 economies.
The country’s position has seen some fluctuations over the years—ranked 116th in 2020, improving to 102nd in 2022, before slipping back to 106th this year.
The GII evaluates innovation performance across multiple dimensions, including human capital, research, infrastructure, market sophistication, and knowledge outputs.
Despite its overall low ranking, the report highlighted Bangladesh as one of the fastest-growing economies in terms of productivity between 2014 and 2024.
“Among the top growers, it is worth mentioning African countries Burkina Faso (4.8%), Kenya (3.3%), and Rwanda (3.3%), as well as Asian countries—Bangladesh and India at 4.5% and 4.3%, respectively,” the report noted.
It further added, “Such rapid productivity growth is particularly important, given that many of these countries have large populations, making their economic progress crucial for global development and poverty reduction.”
Bangladesh scored 21.0 points overall in the index, placing it within the lower-middle-income category, alongside neighbours Pakistan (99th) and Nepal (107th).
The GII relies on about 80 indicators grouped into innovation inputs and outputs to capture the multidimensional nature of innovation.
According to the report, Bangladesh demonstrated relative strengths in infrastructure (90th), creative outputs (86th), and market sophistication (96th). However, it lagged significantly in human capital and research (133rd) and business sophistication (129th).
The global top 10 were dominated by Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, and China.
At the bottom of the ranking were Niger, Angola, Congo, Venezuela, and Mali.
