You have defeated fascism; now focus on bolstering democracy and protecting press freedom
We are proud to inaugurate our photo exhibition, titled "36 DAYS OF JULY -- SALUTING THE BRAVEHEARTS," to honor the courageous students and people who liberated us from the grip of fascism. This tribute is dedicated to the sacrifices of individuals like Abu Sayed, Mugdho, and countless others who gave their lives for freedom. We stand in solidarity with those who suffered injuries, disabilities, trauma, or the loss of loved ones during this struggle.
The exhibition, hosted at The Daily Star Centre until December 7, showcases our coverage of the student-led revolution, including the risks our reporters and photographers took to document the sacrifice and bravery of the movement. It reflects our unwavering commitment to authentic reporting, even under the most challenging circumstances. The "36 Days of July" is a testament to our dedication to exposing the regime's cruelty while celebrating the students' and people's resilience.
Celebrating the New Bangladesh
The revolution has paved the way for a new Bangladesh — one committed to democracy, freedom, and the independence of the press. The students, with the support of the people, have triumphed over fascism, opening doors to possibilities, justice, and rights. This new era inspires hope for a society where discrimination, oppression, and abuse of power are eradicated.
While the movement has united various segments of society, we remain cautious about groups that aim to destabilize its achievements. Through false narratives, hatred, and violence, these forces threaten the spirit of progress. We echo the concerns of the government, student leaders, and political parties regarding the disruptions they cause, undermining the revolution's gains.
Press Under Attack
Recent threats and misinformation targeting The Daily Star and Prothom Alo are part of this destabilizing effort. Attempts to demonize two of the nation's most respected newspapers not only harm unity but also impede progress. Such attacks undermine the freedom of thought and debate essential for building a knowledge-based society.
We welcome constructive criticism based on facts and sound analysis, as it strengthens journalism and enlightens the nation. However, misrepresenting our work and focusing on selective narratives out of context serve only to mislead and divide.
A Legacy of Ethical Journalism
Criticism claiming that The Daily Star supported Sheikh Hasina’s rule is baseless. Over the past 15 years, our publication faced severe harassment, including sedition cases, defamation lawsuits, financial restrictions, and bans on accessing government events. Despite these challenges, we consistently upheld democratic principles, free elections, and the accountability of power.
We criticized the abolition of the caretaker government system, condemned sham elections in 2014 and 2018, and opposed repressive laws like the Digital Security Act. Our unwavering stance against extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and press censorship reflects our commitment to truth and justice.
Standing Firm Against False Narratives
Even as misinformation resurfaces, falsely portraying us as enablers of Hasina’s government, we remain steadfast. These accusations lack merit and will ultimately be discredited, as truth prevails.
Commitment to a Just Society
As we pay tribute to the brave hearts of the 2024 uprising, The Daily Star reaffirms its pledge to democracy, press freedom, and social justice. Our vision aligns with the Sonar Bangla dreamt of by the martyrs of the Liberation War and the recent revolution. Together with students, citizens, and political leaders, we will strive for a Bangladesh defined by the rule of law, equality, and harmony, where the freedoms and rights of all are upheld.
