Traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway as garment workers protest over unpaid wages
The workers have kept the highway blocked for more than 24 hours, leading to a massive 20km traffic jam.
Garment workers demanding overdue wages have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur for over 24 hours, halting traffic in both directions.
The blockade has resulted in a severe 20km traffic jam on both sides of the highway, causing significant hardship for commuters.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Traffic Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim Khan reported around 9 a.m. Sunday that the protest, which began at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, has persisted through the night, with workers blocking the highway and stopping vehicles from moving. "As a result of the protest, there’s a 20km traffic backup from Tongi to Rajendrapur in both directions," he said.
The protestors, employees of TNZ Apparels Limited, have gathered near the Malek Bari area in Gazipur. The factory had been shut down since April and, despite reopening in September, has yet to fulfill payroll obligations. Frustrated by missed salary deadlines, the workers have taken to the streets.
According to the workers, the factory has missed two months' salary payments, with authorities repeatedly postponing payment dates despite mediation attempts involving the army and police.
Having endured months without wages, the workers spent a sleepless night on the highway in protest.
