During a press briefing in Washington yesterday, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller underscored the urgency of addressing the crisis in Myanmar's Rakhine State. "We are closely monitoring the situation and remain deeply concerned about the conflict and its potential to destabilize regional security. Resolving the Rohingya refugee crisis remains a key priority for us," Miller stated.

He praised Bangladesh and its people for their extraordinary generosity in sheltering Rohingya refugees fleeing persecution in Myanmar. "We will continue collaborating with Bangladesh to support the Rohingya and other vulnerable groups from Burma (Myanmar) who have sought refuge there," he added.

The ongoing conflict has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the region. The Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group, now controls over 80 percent of Rakhine State. This area has been a focal point of displacement, with around 750,000 Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh after a military crackdown in 2017. Renewed clashes between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar Junta in recent months have further worsened the situation, forcing an additional 60,000 Rohingya to cross into Bangladesh since July.

Addressing a question regarding the detention of over 30 journalists in Bangladesh, held for more than 60 days without hearings or bail, Miller reiterated the US commitment to press freedom. "As we previously conveyed to the government of Bangladesh, media freedom must be upheld. The press should operate without fear, and such cases must be handled in accordance with the rule of law, ensuring respect for journalists," Miller affirmed.
