"Islamic Extremism" in Bangladesh: Dr. Muhammad Yunus Addresses India’s Concerns, Stating 'It’s Not About'
Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, addressed India’s concerns regarding Islamic extremism in the country. His comments come in the wake of Bangladesh being named The Economist’s Country of the Year 2024, following a landmark student-led uprising.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, has assured that Islamic extremism will not find a foothold in the country.
In an interview with The Economist, Dr. Yunus emphasized the pivotal role of the nation’s youth, highlighting their progressive outlook and neutral stance on religion as key to building a forward-thinking Bangladesh.
His comments followed Bangladesh’s recognition as The Economist’s Country of the Year 2024, awarded for the nation’s remarkable progress over the past year. The honor came in the wake of a historic student-led uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian government, ushering in a transformative era.
Patrick Foulis, The Economist’s Foreign Editor, spoke with Dr. Yunus during the interview. Foulis acknowledged global concerns about the aftermath of revolutions, citing warnings from American and Indian officials about the potential resurgence of Islamic extremism in Bangladesh. He asked Dr. Yunus how he intended to address these fears.
“I can assure you that it’s not happening at all,” Dr. Yunus responded. “These are very enthusiastic young people. They hold a neutral perspective on religion and are determined to build a new Bangladesh. Young people can change the world. It’s not about influencing one country or another.”
Dr. Yunus also expressed pride in Bangladesh’s achievements, attributing the country’s progress to the determination and active participation of its youth, especially young women, in the movement.
“What Bangladesh has done is a testament to the power of the younger generation. Let’s pay attention to young people, particularly young girls, who played a crucial role in the uprising,” he added.
