Fakhrul: Interim government has struggled to remain neutral in certain situations

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the interim government of failing to maintain neutrality on certain issues.

In a statement on Thursday, he said, “Yesterday, I mentioned that if the interim government cannot remain impartial, a neutral government must be in place during the elections. There's a reason for this statement. We see that the interim government is struggling to stay neutral on several matters."

He called on the interim government to fulfill its duties impartially and to address the country’s current challenges.

The comments were made during a discussion organized by the Shaheed Asad Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club, held to mark the 56th martyrdom anniversary of student leader Asaduzzaman, who became a symbol of resistance during the 1969 mass uprising against Pakistan’s autocratic ruler, Ayub Khan.

Asad was killed by Pakistani police on January 20, 1969, while participating in a protest against the atrocities in East Pakistan, near Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Fakhrul emphasized the urgency of holding elections after implementing necessary reforms. “The government formed through those elections will be able to meet the public's expectations and fulfill its commitments,” he said.

He further explained that the BNP is not seeking elections simply to gain power but is concerned about the potential exploitation of the situation if elections are delayed unnecessarily.

According to Fakhrul, all political parties agree on the need for elections as they are essential to the democratic process.

He also criticized those suggesting that elections should be delayed until reforms are completed, questioning, “Should we wait for four or five years? People would be deprived of their voting rights for such an extended period.”
