Adviser: 2,000 crore needed to charter ships for Hajj pilgrims
Religious Affairs Adviser AFM Khalid Hossain stated that transporting Hajj pilgrims by sea could reduce travel costs by 40% compared to air travel. He explained, "We have been in talks with a shipping company, but we currently lack a ship large enough to carry 3,000 pilgrims. Chartering a ship would cost around Tk 2,000 crore."
He further mentioned that if Bangladesh Bank provides a loan, this initiative could be realized, leading to a significant fare reduction. Hossain made these remarks while attending an event as the chief guest at Deobhog Jamia Arabia Darul Uloom Madrasa on Friday night.
He also noted that he plans to discuss the sea travel option with the finance adviser. In addition, Hossain has been working to lower airfare for Hajj pilgrims, and after discussions with Biman Bangladesh Airlines, there is hope that the fare will be reduced to a reasonable level.
The adviser outlined plans for two Hajj packages—one close to Haram Sharif and another two to three kilometers away—both aimed at significantly lowering costs for pilgrims.
