The Chattogram port has received 22,000 tonnes of Atap rice from Myanmar, delivered by the MV Golden Star.

This consignment, imported under a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement, marks the first such shipment under the current interim government, according to a Ministry of Food press release issued on Friday.

Before unloading begins, samples from the shipment will undergo physical testing, and all necessary preparations have been made to ensure a smooth process, the ministry confirmed.

This delivery follows a separate agreement between Bangladesh and Pakistan to import rice. On January 14, the Directorate General of Food signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Pakistan’s Trading Corporation (TCP).

Md Abdul Khaleque, Director General of the Directorate General of Food, and Syed Rafeo Bashir Shah, Chairman of TCP, signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations.

Sources from the Directorate revealed that the procurement process will begin once the government's purchase committee approves it. Shipments from Pakistan are expected to start arriving by February, reports UNB.

The Ministry of Food noted that the MoU is expected to help stabilize the domestic rice market while enhancing economic and trade relations between the two countries.

“This agreement is seen as a step towards strengthening bilateral ties and ensuring food security,” the release stated.
