Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain has said that the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and Japan is firmly grounded in mutual trust, shared aspirations, and a common commitment to progress.

Describing Japan as one of Bangladesh’s most reliable development partners, he noted that the relationship between the two nations has steadily strengthened over the decades, built on respect and confidence.

He made the remarks at a reception hosted by the Japan Embassy in Dhaka on the occasion of Japan’s National Day, marking the birthday of the Emperor, according to a handout issued today.

“We are firmly committed to further deepening Bangladesh’s strategic partnership with Japan for shared peace, prosperity, and stability,” Zahid Hossain said.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s recent democratic transition and successful national elections, the minister said the government’s priorities include reinforcing democratic institutions, ensuring good governance, restoring economic stability, attracting investment, generating employment, and promoting transparency and accountability at all levels.

He added that the government has introduced the ‘Family Card’ programme to strengthen and expand social security coverage and is planning to launch an ‘Agricultural Card’ to support farmers.

“We highly value Japan’s continued cooperation in these areas, including human resource and skills development,” he said.

Emphasizing the strong economic ties between the two countries, Zahid Hossain said Japan, as Bangladesh’s largest bilateral development partner, has made significant contributions to infrastructure, energy, and connectivity development.

He described the recent signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) as a key milestone in advancing bilateral relations.

The minister also expressed deep appreciation for Japan’s ongoing humanitarian support for displaced Rohingyas, noting that Japan’s constructive engagement remains vital for achieving a lasting solution to the crisis.

Japan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi and diplomats from various countries stationed in Dhaka attended the event.
