Shafiqul: The government is giving priority to ensuring Hasina's extradition to Bangladesh to stand trial.

On Tuesday, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stated that one of the government's primary objectives is to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh to stand trial.

"Following the United Nations’ report, pressure is increasing to repatriate her," Shafiqul remarked during a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital. He was responding to a question about the potential for Hasina's trial in absentia if India does not return the ousted prime minister.

Shafiqul continued, “The recently released UN Office of Human Rights report clearly details the crimes she committed, including accusations of crimes against humanity. Following the UN report and similar findings from human rights organizations, significant pressure has built up.”

"As a result of this pressure, India Today conducted a survey showing that 55% of respondents want her sent back to Bangladesh, while some prefer her to be sent to another country. Around 16-17% want her to remain in India. The 127-page UN report explicitly outlines her brutal dictatorship over the past 15-16 years."

He added, “I believe the pressure will intensify further following the UN report. We have formally requested India for her extradition. Our efforts will continue. We want her back to face trial in person, as the people of Bangladesh want to see her held accountable. Bringing her under legal jurisdiction is our top priority, and we are taking all necessary actions to achieve this."

In response to rumors about the resignation of three advisers, Shafiqul stated, “It’s inappropriate to make statements based on rumors. If anything substantial occurs, you will be informed.”

When asked about the government’s stance on the Awami League’s participation in the upcoming general election, he said, “We have repeatedly expressed our position regarding the Awami League’s involvement in the election. Ultimately, it is the people of Bangladesh who will decide on this matter.

"However, one thing is clear—those Awami League leaders, activists, and supporters involved in the July massacre, as well as other incidents of enforced disappearances, murders, massacres, and corruption, will face trial. This is imperative. Once this process is completed, the people and political parties of Bangladesh will determine the future of the Awami League.”
