Fakhrul: BNP supports reforms, but insists the government must hold elections promptly.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that while the party is not opposed to reforms, it insists that the government must hold elections soon.

Fakhrul made these remarks while addressing a rally organized by Jessore BNP at the district’s Town Hall field on Tuesday afternoon. The rally was held to protest the rising prices of essential goods, the worsening law and order situation, demand a clear roadmap for quick elections, and resist fascist conspiracies.

He emphasized that necessary reforms or changes for the elections should be implemented. "We are not against reforms, but elections must be held quickly," he said.

“We remember how, in the name of elections, an incident like 1/11 took place. Moeen Uddin and Fakhruddin tried to seize power by promoting good governance and reforms. But in the end, they had to step down,” Fakhrul added.

He went on: “We all respect and honor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He is truly a source of pride for Bangladesh. He won the Nobel Prize, and world leaders, economists, and reformists hold him in high regard, as do we. That’s why when you (the government) took office, we were hopeful that you would restore people's rights swiftly. We still hope that you will organize elections as soon as possible.”

Fakhrul strongly opposed the idea of holding local government elections before the national elections, stating, “The people will not accept this. If you want to stay in power, resign and come into power through elections. Do not try to cling to power while still in office. Please arrange for a free and fair election.”

He also said, “The fascist has fled, but are we safe? No, we still are not safe. Our lives and property have no security. You all have seen 'Aynaghor.’ Who created it? That fascist Hasina did.”
