Revocation of transshipment facility by India won't pose any issues for Bangladesh: Commerce Adviser

Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin has stated that Bangladesh will not face any significant issues following India’s decision to cancel the transshipment facility for Bangladeshi goods.

“Just yesterday, Wednesday, we held discussions with representatives from various business sectors, including buyers. We are working on alternative solutions to manage the situation independently,” he said.

The adviser made these comments while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Sheikh Bashir Uddin emphasized that Bangladesh is committed to maintaining its competitiveness through self-reliance.
“We’re focusing on boosting our commercial capacity. At the same time, measures are being taken to strengthen connectivity,” he added.

India had initially allowed the transshipment of Bangladeshi goods to third countries through its territory via an order issued on 29 June 2020. However, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) revoked the order on Tuesday.

When asked about the steps being taken in response to this development, the commerce adviser acknowledged the challenges.
“There are infrastructure-related concerns as well as cost implications—we’re actively working to address both. We’re optimistic about overcoming these obstacles,” he said.

In response to growing calls on social media for Bangladesh to reconsider reciprocal transshipment or transit arrangements, Sheikh Bashir Uddin clarified that such decisions fall outside his jurisdiction.
“My role is focused on enhancing our capacity,” he stated.

Regarding the possibility of sending a formal communication to India, he commented, “There are no current plans to issue a letter on this matter.”

He also noted that the United States' recent decision to suspend additional tariffs for three months provides some immediate relief and opens up space for further dialogue.
