Electricity generation has resumed at Unit 1 of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant after a six-day shutdown, with the unit now supplying around 55–60 megawatts to the national grid—offering some relief from load shedding in the northern region, reports UNB.

Chief Engineer Abu Bakkar Siddique said the unit restarted production at 10:00 pm on Friday following necessary repairs. The 125-megawatt unit had been offline since April 25 due to a ruptured boiler pipe.

The power plant, which has a total capacity of 525 megawatts across three units, is also undergoing maintenance work on its 275-megawatt Unit 3. This unit is expected to resume operations by mid-May, further boosting electricity supply.

Authorities have also decided to repair and bring back into operation Unit 2, another 125-megawatt unit that has been out of service for the past five years.

Established in 2006, the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant was designed to utilize coal from the nearby Barapukuria coal mine and support irrigation in eight agriculture-dependent northern districts. It initially operated with two 125-megawatt units, with a third 275-megawatt unit added in 2017.
