Capital crime in the spotlight as DMP tightens its grip
DMP intensifies crackdown on extortionists, drug traffickers, armed criminals, and online gambling networks
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has launched a citywide crackdown on extortionists, drug traffickers, illegal arms holders, and online gambling networks starting from 1 May.
Acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar announced the drive at a press briefing held today at the DMP Media Centre on Mintoo Road.
He said the initiative aims to curb extortion, drug trade, the display of illegal weapons, and online gambling across the capital. “A coordinated security strategy has been put in place, including block raids, intelligence-based surveillance, and CCTV monitoring to dismantle criminal networks,” he added.
Over the past 48 hours, police have arrested 58 listed and 94 unlisted extortionists, recovering account records, transaction details, and video evidence. Separate drives targeting drugs and illegal arms also resulted in notable seizures and arrests.
“We are placing special emphasis on cybercrime, with dedicated teams monitoring online gambling and fraud,” he said.
Operations have also been carried out in markets, transport terminals, and other sensitive areas. Permanent and temporary police camps have been established in key locations such as Bosila and Karwan Bazar.
Sarwar said the operations will be expanded further with hotspot-based surveillance, additional CCTV installations, enhanced intelligence efforts, and stronger community policing.
He urged citizens to report any suspicious activity, assuring confidentiality, and reiterated a zero-tolerance stance against all forms of crime.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam and Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) Md Shafiqul Islam were also present at the briefing.
