Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that foreign observers who endorsed the last three elections as fair, acceptable, and credible will not be invited to monitor the upcoming polls.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Tuesday following a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh at the Election Commission office.
“The Canadian High Commissioner asked whether we will be able to complete preparations for the upcoming election properly. We shared detailed information, particularly about our upcoming nationwide voter awareness campaign,” the CEC said.
He added that Canada has agreed to assist with training polling agents and observers. “The High Commissioner also highlighted the success of our efforts in registering female voters,” he noted.
According to the CEC, the Canadian envoy also inquired about how awareness campaigns would be carried out in the hill tracts and raised concerns about the potential misuse of artificial intelligence during elections, based on Canada’s recent experiences.
“We have sought cooperation from Canada in this regard, and the High Commissioner assured us of Canada’s support for a free and impartial election in Bangladesh,” he said.
When asked whether the election timeline was discussed, the CEC replied, “There was no such discussion. What you know about the election schedule is exactly what I know. I’ll let you know two months in advance.”
